Theodore Pak, MD, PhD

I am a physician-scientist currently appointed as an Assistant Professor in the Division of Infectious Diseases at University of California Irvine (UCI). In addition to working in my computational lab, I also serve as Medical Director of Epidemiology and Infection Prevention at the new UCI Health-Irvine campus. I also attend on the inpatient Infectious Diseases consult service at both this hospital and UCI Medical Center in Orange, CA.

  • I completed Internal Medicine residency and Infectious Diseases fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. My postdoc was in the Harvard Department of Population Medicine, advised by Michael Klompas and Chanu Rhee. My postdoctoral research centered on clinical epidemiologic investigations of patient outcomes after antimicrobial treatment for suspected sepsis and the efficacy of hospital infection prevention interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

  • I obtained my M.D. and Ph.D. at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and wrote a dissertation in the lab of Andrew Kasarskis. There, I worked on bioinformatics software that supported a healthcare system-wide pathogen surveillance program premised on routine whole genome sequencing of clinical microbiology isolates. I also worked on multi-omics analyses of the host reponse to viral infections, particularly dengue and chikungunya.

  • Prior to medical school, I spent about three years as a full-time software engineer at a medical device startup and then an electronic medical record company (later acquired by Medsphere).
